OUR STUDY

YES, YOUR BREAST PUMP IS DEFINITELY TALKING TO YOU!

We are listening to mothers' experiences of the talking breast pump. If you’ve ever had this experience and would like to participate in our research study, we’d love to listen to your stories and hear your insights!

Yes, your breast pump is definitely talking to you! You know what we're talking about—that repetitive, monotonous, mechanical sound that somehow morphs into repeated words and phrases. If you’ve ever heard it, you are not the only one! Mothers have been reporting on this interesting, but not uncommon experience via websites, blogs, and social media for several years. In fact, it’s so common that the phenomenon has now been featured on NPR's All Things Considered SoundClips series, the HBO TV series Love Life starring Anna Kendrick, and even in a musical titled Life in Boobs (see our Listen page).

OUR PURPOSE

The Context

The pressure to meet breastfeeding recommendations can be intense. Mothers are increasingly turning to breast pumps to aid them in providing breast milk for their children.

With up to 85% of moms reporting using the technology, breast pumps are now considered an essential component of the breastfeeding experience and an integral

part of the process.

The Problem

Research investigating issues mothers encounter while using breast pumps is lacking, with even less exploring mothers' direct perspectives and lived experiences.

Further, current studies examining

the intersection of culture and infant feeding are scant despite the inherent social and cultural situatedness in which these decisions are made.

Our Purpose

We aim to address gaps in

the literature by listening to

mothers' experiences of

the talking breast pump,

and exploring what

it means to them.

We are particularly interested in mothers' narration and meaning-making process as it emerges

in sociocultural and

historical contexts.
